What time of the day do you work best? Morning? Evening?

Joel Matlin

In the morning I like to look at the day ahead and be aware of any obstacles I may encounter. If meetings are on the agenda, I plan them for before or after lunch as I’m not a big fan of lunch meetings. I find it distracting to try and conduct business while eating and I like to enjoy my food! In the evening I evaluate my day and see how well I scored on the productivity index!

Do you spend more time in the office or on the go?

Joel Matlin

About 50/50. I love being in the office to connect with the team and attend to any business that can’t be done elsewhere but I know that I am also using my time effectively when I am out there connecting with people who can help grow the business.

What do you love most about what you do?

Joel Matlin

The sense of accomplishment! To know that I have built up something that will help the public, our staff and shareholders makes me feel great.

Is there anything you dislike about what you do or about your industry?

Joel Matlin

Well, every job has its tedious moments and it would be unrealistic to think mine is any different but honestly I can’t really think of anything about it or the industry that I dislike.

Do you work in silence? Listen to music?

Joel Matlin

Silence or soft classical music works for me.

Under what conditions do you best generate ideas?

Joel Matlin

In the mornings after exercising I take a few moments to relax in my hot tub. I find the peaceful atmosphere seems to get the creative side of my brain working.

Are business decisions for love or for money?

Joel Matlin

To me they are a mix of the two. Money is a great motivator but business isn’t solely about the money. If you are just focusing on that side of things too much I think you lose the ability to achieve it. You’ve got to love your business and do what’s right for it.

Is the customer (client) always right?

Joel Matlin

Not 100% of the time! An honest customer is always right but unfortunately, some customers are trained to think if they complain they will get what they want.

Who did/do you look up to?

Joel Matlin

I always have a high regard for many successful entrepreneurs.

If you could say one thing to the younger you, what would it be?

Joel Matlin

Follow your dream (with a touch of reality) and try to be a decent person to all.
